This design of a new retail environment concept needed to be accurately informed by the right thinking in terms of Toyota’s brand positioning and the territory that Toyota owns in people’s minds.
Toyota approached us to assist in the design of all their national dealerships. We took into consideration the need to update the design to create a more dynamic look that brings the brand values into the showroom.
The Toyota generic dealership design responds to its brand values through creating an environment that is ‘for everyone’, ‘easy going’, ‘surprising’ and demonstrates ‘functional technology’.
While retaining the current identity and colour palette, a fresh and identifiable environment has been achieved . As is characteristic for motor dealerships, a transparent façade allows visibility of display vehicles and the building creates a stage and backdrop for this display.
Oval forms from the logo were used in the primary visual and functional facade elements. The showroom is entered through an oval opening in the entrance portal, the external face of the exposed structural columns are softened with oval cladding and the louvred overhang and perforated curved screens in the upper façade band create screening from the harsh African sun to help in creating a comfortable internal environment. Horizontally slatted screens in the façade animate the expanse of glazing and designate themed areas within the showroom.
Warm colours and a considered material selection create a welcoming and sensitive showroom environment. Dedicated themed areas denoting family, youth, adventure and utility removes the clutter and allows for a more specific focus on the different types of vehicle offerings.
The customer experience is enhanced through a colourful and intimate bistro linking the service area with the showroom and a dedicated new vehicle handover area that completes the buying experience
