Brand Positioning

"Credible, believable and easily translatable across various collateral, the identity is iconic, highly memorable and highly visible".

A long standing player in Nigeria’s financial sector, 60 year old Wema appointed The Brand Union to devise a new strategy for the bank that would help Wema carve out its own niche in an increasingly competitive market, as well as design a new corporate identity that maintains their sense of heritage and tradition.

The iconography uses heritage as its point of departure with an African-inspired marque that draws from its ethnic roots and alludes to African craft. The stylised W is suggestive of an African basket-craft, appropriate to the bank’s positioning as a nurturing and safe organisation. The embracing circling outer arms of the W refer to two points coming together, speaking of partnership and protection. The bank’s link to wealth, trust and stability is symbolically and literally communicated through colour, purple for differentiation and being highly visible as well as its connotations of prestige, legacy and status, while gold speaks of the bank’s groundedness and connection to the country.

Our scope of work included Corporate Identity rollout to corporate collateral, supporting collateral, event collateral, vehicle livery, signage and merchandising, all detailed in an accompanying standards manual.
